An eccentric man living alone in a decrepit house in Tokyo periodically transforms into a 100-foot tall giant in order to defend Japan against similarly sized monsters. An eccentric man aged about 40 lives alone in a decrepit house in Tokyo. He periodically transforms into a giant, about 30 meters tall, and defends Japan by battling similarly sized monsters that turn up and destroy buildings. The giant and the monsters are computer-generated. I enjoy this movie. It's has made me laugh until i have cried, but i have a bad sense of humor so there's that too. What a mishmash of genre… documentary cross Japanese monster cross x comedy. Saw this at Toronto film fest 2007.

The monsters are unlike any you'll see. The hero for that matter is just as … UNcommon. The plot is done in documentary style, maybe to 'say' something. I can't help but see the social (hero concept, TV rating, previous working generation, athletes, respect for elderly…etc ) , political (U.S. influence, gay rights, environmental ..et), commentaries. But are they intended or just detail satirical touch-ups by a clever director? Even the subtitle tries to translates the banners, graffiti, and what not. The director has a unusual sense of humor – the truth and practical matters in things. And that's quite a departure. I hurt myself laughing at this amazingly inventive mockumentary, and because it's so good, I refuse to give away much more than an insistent recommendation.
